Actuaries in Public Health with Anna Stephens

Anna is a Senior Manager within the Collaborative Commissioning team at NSW Health, where her team uses advanced analytics techniques to design, monitor and evaluate new models of healthcare being piloted across the state. She has over 7 years’ international experience supporting innovative & evidenced-based healthcare initiatives across Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

Anna has extensive experience overseeing analytics-led projects across public and private health strategy, healthcare funding models and risk equalisation. Anna draws upon her technical expertise and health knowledge to assist state and international health departments to improve patient outcomes by ensuring patients have access to the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

In this interview I asked Anna:

  • How she got a role as an actuary working for NSW Health,

  • What value she thinks actuaries can add in a public health setting,

  • What advice she would give to actuaries who want to work in public health (e.g. roles, qualifications, learning etc), and

  • What she thinks people should know about the value of actuaries working in public health.
