Leadership Reflections with Sam Maitra

Sam is a freelance GI Actuary working with consulting houses and insurance companies while developing a start-up that helps reduce plastic waste. He is currently an Associate within EY’s Actuarial Services function. Prior to this he was Head of Actuarial Services of Avant Mutual Limited, Australia’s largest private medical indemnity insurer. Sam has over 20 years of experience within the General Insurance industry from the perspectives of a large listed insurer, a privately owned mutual, as a consultant and in-house actuary working in Australia and Asia, for direct insurers and in reinsurance.

Sam has a passion for seeing people grow into their potential and people collaborating. He loves solving difficult problems where there is tangible benefit for customers and staff. He is a member of the organising committee of the Actuarial Hackathon which is an event where actuaries volunteer their skills to help charities with challenges they are facing. While juggling several projects, Sam enjoys balancing quality time with family and enjoys keeping fit, present and grateful.

In this interview, I asked Sam for his tips and war stories about:

  •  Finding purpose and meaning in his work as an actuary,

  • His top tips for actuaries wanting to improve their work life balance,

  • Whether leaders are born or made,

  • How to tackle difficult conversations at work, and

  • Having confidence and trusting in your abilities where you don’t have experience
