Episode 8: Emerging Actuarial Leaders with Dan Wang

“Invest in the personal training on soft skills and management because I do find that as actuaries we'll probably heavily focus on the technical aspects. The new communication course is great but, in addition to it, I think getting some training in leadership will be really rewarding as well. From my personal experience, I find those investments quite worthwhile.”

Dan Wang,
Actuarial Leader

Dan is an actuary with over ten years of experience in Life Insurance, including valuation and regulatory capital. Originally from China, Dan came to Australia to complete his University studies and has lived in Sydney ever since. He is currently an Actuarial Manager at Dataly Actuarial and Data Consulting. Prior to this, he was the IFRS17 and Data Science actuary at MetLife. Outside work, Dan is the cook at home and plays competitive tennis every week.

In this interview I asked Dan:

  1. About his career path to date.

  2. A great leader he has worked for and what was unique or different about their management style.

  3. What he most enjoys about working as an actuary in a management role.

  4. What is something he’s found interesting / challenging / unexpected about becoming an actuarial manager.

  5. One tip he’d have for actuaries stepping into management roles for the first time.
